reno. harry reid say there's was a huge explosion. >> we don't know exactly what happened but it was a violent explosion, we know that. my thoughts are with those who are injured and, of course, families of those with lost loved ones. >> want to bring in our pentagon correspondent, barbara starr. tell us, first of all, what do we know about how this even happened? >> reporter: well, suzanne, the military is saying seven marines were killed when a 60 millimeter mortar shell, already in the tube, in the weapon essentially exploded. seven marines killed, a number injured and medevac'd to hospital. likely with serious trauma injuries about the training situation, they would have been standing quite close to the mortar and to the weapon when it exploded. now a major investigation, of course, under way trying to determine what exactly happened and trying to see how they go forward from here. but seven military families, suzanne, getting the worst possible news today. >> such a shame. thank you, barbara. appreciate that. >>> a plan now to commit mass murder on a college campus. p

that gives funding for school security. do you think harry reid made a good move? >> well, it's disappointing. but he's done the calculus and knows that an assault weapon bill will not pass the senate. sadly, i think he also knows that even in the democratically controlled senate, a background check for criminals, a universal background check for all of gun sales, including for criminals will not pass the senate. and it was certainly not going to pass the house. so that's what we're up against. and just so everyone is clear about this, you know, i'm a law-abiding gun owner. i own firearms, i go to a gun store where they run a background check. but it's perfectly legal in 33 states to buy guns from private dealers without a background check. so law-abiding gun owners go to gun stores, criminals go to private gun dealers legally and buy 1,000 weapons a day. it's amazing to me that our members of congress cannot find their backbone enough to require a criminal background check for criminals. >> well, senator feinstein and obviously the assault weapons ban was really what she was pushing hardest.

lack of majority in the senate which is led by the philosopher harry reid. but they maintained by a large strengthen the house of representatives, losing only about eight seats. and a position of state legislatures were very strong. that position that they built up in 2010, they lost legislatures in maine and minnesota, but by and large can't legislatures that they one in 2010, and had the kind of advantage that they haven't had in state legislatures since the 1920s. so we are 25 states that have governors in both houses of legislature, controlled by republicans. they are not just small states. and 53% of the nation's population versus -- i believe it is 13 states with democratic governors or legislatures, 21% of the nation's population. so let me just leave you with a final number out of the exit poll. the electorate that reelected obama when asked whether government should do more to solve problems or whether government is doing to me things better left to businesses and individuals, 52% government is doing too many things. 43% government should do more. .. death of the assault weapons ban. it's harry reid conceding it can't be part of the main bill. they're trying to focus on what is doable. what can they get done in april? and what they think can get done would be universal background checks, including for private transactions. if i was going to sell you a gun that doesn't have to be any sort of background check on that under a bill being knocked around in the senate, you would have to have some validation there before that purchase could be made. and that's the sticking point right now. that's a far cry from what democrats were talking about two or three months ago. that's a pretty small, narrow provision in the scope of all the big gun controls that democrats wanted to push in the beginning. >> that said, david, ignatius, if a bill passes that even allows the individual transfer without background checks, that would close the gun loophole, also stop something that needs to be stopped, and that is the purchasing of weapons online. that's a significant -- >> for gun control folks. it would just be a shame from my standpoint if in the
